OBITUARY-OSCAR E JOHNSON passed away in St Joseph's hospital in Mitchell Saturday afternoon, April 29, 1944 at about five o'clock. He had been in failing health for five or six months and had undergone an operation just two weeks previous to his death. He appeared to be making satisfactory recovery until a day or two before his death.
Oscar Emil Johnson, son of John and Sophie Carlson, was born Sept 28, 1866 at Motala, Ostergotland, Sweden. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Mr Johnson came to Canova in 1889 at the age of 23 and this has remained his home. He farmed in Vermillion township for many years and then retired and moved to Canova some years ago. While a resident of Vermillion township he served on the school board and town board at various times and took an active interest in all community activities.
On Dec 9, 1893 he was united in marriage to Clara Olson at Salem who preceded him in death several years ago.
Surviving relatives are his children, Mrs Hildur Carlson of Slayton, Minn, Mrs Alice Hood of Sikeston, MO, Mrs Ethel Miller of Winfred and Albert and Harold Johnson of Canova, a brother Thedore of Enumclaw, Wash, and several brothers and sisters in Sweden, besides 13 grandchildren. Two sons, Arthur O and Carl and one brother, Victor of Lake Andes have preceded him in death.
The funeral is being held this Wedensday afternoon at the Canova Congregational church with Rev MC Haecker conducting the services. Burial will be in the Canova cemetery. The pall bearers are Andrew Gusarson, JE Johnson, Arthur Peterson, HY Loudenburg, Henry Lueth and Ed C Pearson.
Friends by the score will extend sympathy to the bereft relatives.
