A.O. JOHNSON DIED SATURDAY-Arthur O Johnson passed away in the Canova hospital at 12.30 am Saturday morning. The cause of his death was heart trouble from which he had suffered for two years. His last illness lasted about a week.
Arthur Oscar Johnson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Oscar E Johnson of Canova, was born on the Johnson farm east of Canova on January 10, 1895. He made his home here continuoulsy with the exception of one year spent in the army during the World War. He was a farmer.
On March 24, 1921 he was married to Miss Sara Farmer in the Union church parsonage. Surviving him and his wife; twin daughters, Vera and Velma; his parents; two brothers, Albert and Harold; and three sisters, Mrs John E Carlson of Clarno, Mrs CE Hood of Sioux Falls, and Mrs GB Miller of Winfred; and a number of other relatives. One brother, Carl, died in infancy.
Arthur's war record included eleven months of service in France and he was discharged with the rank of corporal. While in France he saw action in the Muese Argonne offensive and Theaucourt sector. He was a charter member of the local American Legion post and has been a continuous member of the post since its organization. He has served the post in the capacity of Americanization officer, finance officer, historian, and liaison officer. He was always very active in Legion affairs and took a deep interest in the organization.
He was also a member of the local Modern Woodman lodge.
Arthur was one of the stalwart dependable young men of the community and it seems sad that one like this should be ruthlessly cut down in the prime of life. His passing will be mourned by friends by the score who will extend their heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon with short services at the home and at the Canova Congregational church. The local American Legion post were in charge of the funeral with the Rev EE Whiteside of Howard preaching the sermon. A quartet consisting of Mrs Erik Erikson, Jr., Mrs JE McNamee, CR Forsberg and Glenn Shaw sang with Miss Mabel Strobel as accompanist.
The pall bearers were Myrl Loudenburg, Harry DuBois, John Daniel, John Falk, Henry Hause and Andrew Gusarson. Burial was in the Canova cemetery.
