FINAL RITES FOR MRS O LANIER-Funeral services were held last Wednesday afternoon in the Canova Congregational church for Mrs Oscar W Lanier, who died at her home in Alton, IL, on Nov 5 at the age of 33 years, 3 months and 21 days.
The services were conducted by James Klassen of Huron, student pastor of the Union Presbyterian church. The church choir sang with Miss Betty Williams as organist.
Pall bearere were Ward Brock, Joe Androf, Ted Phillips, Ronald Carlson, Clifford Johnson and Ervin Zulk. The Willoughby Funeral Home of Howard was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Canova cemetery.
Velma Ann Johnson was born July 15, 1922 on a farm near Canova, the daughter of Mrs Sara Johnson and the late Arthur O Johnson.
She grew to young womanhood in this vicinity and graduated from the Canova high school in May, 1940. She entered nurses training at the Huron Clinic in September of that year and completed her training at St Joseph hospital in Alton, IL, receiving her RN degree in January, 1944.
She was married to Oscar W Lanier of Alton on January 10, 1944, and this has remained her home.
Velma was baptized and joined the Canova Congregational church. After her marriage, she transfered to the Baptist church in Alton.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, having joined as a junior member and later joining the adult organization. She was a very active member of the St Joseph Nurses Alumni at Alton and served as secretary-treasurer and president of the organization for a number of years. She also served as an instructor in the St Joseph School of Nursing besides serving on various committees in serveral community projects at that place.
Surviving are her husband; mother, Mrs Sara Johnson; step-father, Elmer W Johnson; twin sister, Mrs Vera Ross of Safford, Ariz; and sister, Janis Johnson of Canova.
Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral included her husband; Mrs Vera Ross, her sister; Mr and Mrs Julius Cook and Mr and Mrs Joe Lanier of Birmingham, AL; Mr and Mrs Ward Brock and Mr and Mrs Joe Androff of Alton, IL; Mr and Mrs Art Farmer, Mr and Mrs Vernon Farmer and Kennneth Farmer of LeMars, IA; Mr and Mrs Arthur Rundell and Mildred and Mr and Mrs Leonard Benny of DeSmet; Mrs Severine Tarum, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Phillips and Ted Phillips of Hayti; Mr and Mrs Albert Tarum of Hazel; Mr and Mrs Ronald Carlson, Mr and Mrs Jack Palmer and Mr and Mrs Clyde Powers, Jr, of Sioux Falls; Mr and Mrs Carl Larson, Mr and Mrs Hjalmar Olson and Miss Hilma Olson of Montrose; Mr and Mrs Hjalmar E Olson, Mrs Anna Olson, Mr and Mrs Ray Sandine and Mrs Albert Kipp of Salem, and others from neighboring towns and communities.
