Obituary-Funeral mass will take place at 10 o'clock today (28) at Chruch of the Incarnation, 1001 N Brand, Glendale, for Jim Mills, 60, well-known character actor and voice specialist, who died at the UCLA Medical Center April 24, 1980 after a long illness.
Born in San Francisco, Mills began his theatrical career at the age of nine in minstrel shows and vaudeville. He served in World War II as a public relations man and entertainment producer for the Air Force. In 1950 he was a major radio personality in Chicago. He had the first mobile broadcasting studio on wheels, a 60-foot plexiglass broadcasting station. Later he toured Africa, Asia and Europe for TWA, broadcasting feature stories back to the United States and earned the title of the World's First International Disc Jockey.
He then moved to Hollywood and worked at all the major studios as a voice-over specialist and dramatic actor. His most recent television credits include "Police Woman," Fantasy Island," "Salvage," "From here to Eternity," and "Police Story." His motion picture credits include "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Swarm".
Mills is survived by his wife, Jan Mills, who works in the Location Department at Columbia Pictures, sons Todd and Brian, daughters Linda and Monica, as well as two brothers, Jack and Ted.
