Obituary
Gerald Herman Miller, 84, of Howard, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Whispering Winds Assisted Living, Howard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Wednesday, July 8th, 2015 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Howard, with burial to follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Noon to 5pm at Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard and resume 6pm at the catholic church with a Scripture and Rosary service to be said at 7pm.
Gerald Herman Miller was born February 12, 1931 at Madison, South Dakota to Herman and Oliva (Lauer) Miller. Gerald was raised in the Howard area, where he attended St. Agatha Catholic High School, graduating in 1949. After high school Gerald attended South Dakota State University and served in the Army National Guard and worked at Miner County Bank, Howard. Gerald also lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On April 25, 1953 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Oldham, South Dakota, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Mary Ann McAdaragh. The couple lived a short time in Minneapolis, then returned to Howard and farmed north of Howard. In 1957, Gerald took his growing family to Brookings, South Dakota where he completed his degree at SDSU. They then returned to the farm north of Howard and Gerald commuted to work at the FHA in DeSmet while farming. In 1967, Gerald transferred to the FHA office in Plankinton, South Dakota, where the family lived until 1969. At that point Gerald farmed full time north of Howard and at his parents’ farm south of Howard. Mary Ann passed away on November 9, 2008.
Gerald has been a member of the Howard School Board, Central Electric Board, Miner County Bank Board, Howard American Legion and Howard Industries. Gerald was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, Howard, the Knights of Columbus, Farmers Coop and Howard Golf Course. Gerald enjoyed traveling the states with Mary Ann and their overseas trips, especially to see the children, grandchildren and other relatives.
Those grateful for having shared in his life include his children: Kathryn (Stephen) Holmes of Garrison, ND; Steven (Lizette) Miller of Albany, CA; Robert Miller of Omaha, NE; David (Marcia) Miller of Howard, SD; Joseph (Eileen Willingham) Miller of Arlington, VA; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; two sisters: Grace (Tom) Wolf of Madison, SD; Beverly Sadler of Mitchell, SD; other relatives and friends.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ann, a brother: Larry and a sister: Bonnie.
