Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Mon., Aug. 9, for Maxine Birdena Breuer, 86, Howard, who died peacefully at her home on Aug. 5, 2010. The services will be held in St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard, with burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard, with a scripture and rosary service to be said at 7 p.m. at St. Agatha Catholic Church.

Maxine Clites was born on Oct. 29, 1923, on a farm in Miner County to Floyd and Ethel Clites. She attended country schools and graduated at the top of her class from Argonne Consolidated School in 1941.

During World War II, she moved with friends to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She married Vince Breuer on May 7, 1946, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard. He had been serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific.

After their last child entered school, she began working for the federal government at the ASCS office in Howard. She worked in the office for 22 years, until retiring in 1984.

In 2008, they moved to Whispering Winds assisted living. Vince's health later forced him to move to the nursing home.

She was a devoted member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and was involved in church and school activities.

Survivors include her husband, Vince of Howard; their children, Marlene of Madison, Carolyn (Doug) Jerlow of Wentworth, Jim of Las Vegas, Nev., Don of Tea, Gary (Sandy) of Madison, and Cheryl (Rich) Laible of Howard; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lois Skyberg; and her brother, Lowell Clites.
