Misc. Notes
In the fall of 1900 he left Iowa and moved to a farm in Garnett, Anderson Co., Kansas. He was there for three years and had only one good crop. One year he had a drought that destroyed his crop and one year he was hailed out so they left Kansas when Rose was three and George was 6 months old. By now they were broke so they put their belongings in their covered wagon and went to St. Joe, Missouri where he found work for a time.
They finally came back to Des Moines, Iowa and he got a job working nights at the Ford Motor Company which was located at the corner where 19th Street, Grand and Locust Street come together and is now Central Campus. When he went home after work he walked in the middle of the street with a pipe under his arm so if anyone tried to jump him he had something to fight back with. He lived at 1517 Mulberry Street which was on the south side of the railroad track down in the bottom. The house was shabby and colored black from the smoke of the trains.
They eventually moved to the farm on Army Post road near Commerce, Polk Co., Iowa. Grandma didn't want to come to the country as they had a good income with his town job. This is where they were living when Henry became ill with heart trouble and died.2
