Misc. Notes
Information comes from the book Germans To America -Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, 1850-1855, Volume 1, January 1850-May 1851.
The passenger list shows Jacob Kirchner, age 54, arriving in New York on May 22, 1850. The name of the ship was "Jason", which sailed from Bremen, Germany. The list includes Jacob's wife Catharine, age 54, and their children: Francis, age 28; Catherine, age 26; Dorthea, age 23; Juliane age 17; Eva age 20; Georg, age 12; and Nicolaus, age 7.
Francis and Catherine, two of Eva Katherine's children from her first marriage to ? Roeder are called Francis and Catherine Kirchner on the ship's list.
The passenger list shows the family as originating from the Province of Bavaria ( Code-BV)
Jacob is listed as a farmer (Code-FMR) and Francis (Frank) as a joiner (Code-JNR) on the passenger list. The document shows the family's destination is Pennsylvania (Code-PA).
Jacob and his family settled in Drifting (known as Coppers Settlement), Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. The other two Roeder children, Michael and Sarah, from Catherine's first marriage also immigrated around the same time as Jacob and Catherine. The 1850 Census of Morris Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania shows Jacob Cierkner (a mispelling on the part of the census taker) age 60, a farmer; Catherine age 65; Juliana age 17; George age 14; Nickolas age 10; and Frances age 26, a Carpenter; and Eva age 21 Census also lists Catherine Rader (Roeder) age 29, and Michael Rader age 28, a Farmer. The Census report shows errors in mispelling and documentation of ages of the family members.
The Probate Documents concerning the estate of Jacob show that Jacob died with insufficient assets for the payment of his debts. His real estate and household effects were sold to pay his creditors. The list of the personal property of the late Jacob Kirchner sold on July 5, 1861 shows several items purchased by Francis and George Kirchner who were both owed money at the time of Jacob's death.
It is believed that Jacob was granted citizenship to the United States on May 20, 1856. Francis received his citizenship the same day.
Jacob and Katherine are buried in the St. Severen's Church cemetery in Drifting, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania (formerly Coopers settlement).
