Otto fought in France in WWI. His unit was over run by the Germans after being gassed. Otto pretended to be dead while the Germans walked over and around him. When night finally came, he crawled away in the darkness and was able to return to Allied control. His health was compromised for the rest of his life due to being gassed.
Obituary
Obituary-Funeral Mass for Otto William Miller, 76, was held January 2, at St Agatha Catholic church. Mr Miller was born in 1896 in St Mary,s, IA and died at a Sioux Falls hospital following a long illness. He married Sophia Schaul at Roswell, 1933. He has been a resident of Miner County since the early 1900's and retired from farming in 196l. Survivors include his widow, a sister, Mrs Thresia Peschong, Howard, three brothers, Herman & Frank, Howard and Henry, Scottsdale, AZ.
Otto W Miller died in the Veteran's Hospital, in Sioux Falls at the age of 76 years 10 months and 9 days. Feneral services were conducted at St Agatha Catholic church on January 2, 1973 at 10.00 am. Msgr HP Kolbeck officiating with interment ment at St Nicholas cemetery, Roswell, SD. Pallbearers were Duane F Miller, Dennis E Miller, Gerald H Miller, Robert Hammond, Mark J Breuer and Alan P Peschong. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Nels Pederson Post American Legion.
