John R. McKinney, 79, of Dallas Center died of a heart ailment Monday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10 am Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel, of which he was a member. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Dallas Center.
Mr. Mc Kinney was born in Bevington and had lived in Waukee before moving to Dallas Center 50 years ago. He was retired from John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny and was a zoning administrator for Dallas County. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Adel-Waukee Knights of Columbus, Izaak Walton League, Dallas Center Coffee Club and a past president of United Auto Workers Union Local 450. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, gardening and cooking.
He is survived by three daughters, Chris Eckert of Runnells, Jo Drost of Indianola and Renee Pruitt of Des Moines; four sisters, Leona Dittmer of Des Moines, Theresa Hart and Rosemary Penick, both of Bayard, and Anna King of Winterset; a brother, Leonard of Longmont, Colorado; eight grand children; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane.
Friends may call after 2 pm Thursday at Brandt Funereal Home in Dallas Center, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 pm and where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to his church in Adel or St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Dallas Center.
