He then entered the Eclectric College of Medicine in Cincinnati, OH, from which he graduated in 1857. Over the next 13 years, he practiced in several places, including his home town of Brighton, Clinton, OH, and other places in the Great Lakes area.
He moved to Jacksonville in 1870, where he resumed practice and continued until his death. He also operated an apothecary shop in connection with his office at 62 Liberty Street. Dr. Bettes and his family were early settlers of Jacksonville, having located here about the same time as the forebearers of the Stockton family. The original Stockton business was a newspaper and bookshop. Dr. Bettes won the affection of the citizens of Jacksonville for his gallant service during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1888, when he gave freely of his professional skills at great risk to his own health.
