Misc. Notes
Reverend William attended Emmanual College in Cambridge, England. He was inaugurated as Mayor of Leicester, England, August 30, 1587.
He was installed as Rector of St. Nicholas Church at Stevenage, England on December 6, 1598 by Bishop Chadderton. Steveage is localed less than two miles from Baldock. His successor, Richard Meridith, was installed as Rector 30 years later on October 27, 1629.
The will of Reverend William, dated November 1629, is found in Doctor's Commons in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. He mentions wife Elizabeth, son Richard, and daughters Mary and Sarah. Elizabeth, John and William are named on the monument at the Church at Stevenage, but not in the will. They probably received their inheritance early - as they left for America in 1633. Mary is not on the monument. Her baptism was not found either.
A tablet on the north wall of the Church bears the following inscription:
Translation - "Here lies William Pratt, Bachelor of Sacred Theology and most illustrous Rector of this Church during thirty years. He had three sons, John, William and Richard and the same number of daughters, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth by his renowned wife Elizabeth.
At length, the course of his life being run, and his age becoming burdensome, he immigrated to the celestial country in the year of salvation, 1629, at age 67."
The Rectory of Stevenage lies in the Diocese of Lincoln, the Archdeaconry of Huntington, and Deanery of Hitchin, where the childrens' baptisms are recorded.
