Gerald C. Sunner was born March 23, 1929, in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Carl and Helen Sunner. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1947, then enlisted in the Army, 101st Airborne with his twin brother, Gordon. In January 1951 he attended Wartburg College, then the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1957. He then did his internship at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
In 1952 he married Shirley Derscheid and three children Debra, John, and Brian were born to this union. The couple moved to Fort Dodge in 1960. In 1974 they moved to Lake Okoboji and practiced in Spencer and Milford. He and Shirley lived and practiced in California from 1985 to 1990. He semi-retired in 2002 to enjoy farming, real estate development and professional football.
Dr. Sunner died Friday, January 5, 2007 at his home. He was 77 years of age.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Shirley of Milford, IA; daughter, DD Sunner of Iowa City, IA; sons, John Sunner of Spirit Lake, IA and Brian Sunner of Okoboji, IA; grandson, Adam Sunner of Spirit Lake, IA; brothers, Dr. Kurt and Betty Sunner of Spirit Lake, and Dr. Paul Sunner of Cedar Rapids, IA; sister, Helen Chapman of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters-in-law; Bonnie Sunner of Clear Lake, IA, and Barbara Sunner Hull of Humboldt, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen Sunner, older brother, Harold and twin brother, Gordon.
