OBITUARY-Elmer W Johnson was born in Ogden, Iowa, on February 3, 1897, the eldest son of Louis J and Cassie Johnson. He moved with his parents to a farm near Howard, SD in 1910 and then to a farm northeast of Canova.
He entered the Army August 29, 1918 and was discharged on Jan 27, 1919 at Camp Funston, Kansas, returning to South Dakota to farm for a number of years.
He was united in marriage to Mrs Sara Johnson on June 25, 1935. To his union one daughter was born.
They farmed for a number of years before moving into Canova. After leaving Canova in 1960, they lived in Highmore and Huron, SD.
Due to illness, Mr Johnson was entered into the Veterans Hospital at Fort Meade, SD where he passed away Dec 25, 1972 at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 25 days.
Elmer was a life member of the Orville Redding American Legion Post No 61 of Canova.
Survivors include his widow, Sara; and his daughter, Janis, Mrs Jerry Wingen of Enfield, Conn; four grandsons; step-daughters, Vera; one step granddaughter; five brothers; Clifford and Floyd of Canova; Roy of Watertown; and Juhl and Leonard of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Interment was in the Canova Cemetery with military service.
