Sister Bernadine Miller passed away on February 18, 1977, three days after her 94th birthday. She spent 71 years of her life as a professed member of the Congregation.
Sister Bernadine, baptized Bernadine, and daughter of Michael and Mary (Ratterman) Miller, was born on February 15, 1883, at St Mary's , Iowa. She entered the Adorers of the Blood of Christ at Wichita, Kansas on January 30, 1904, from Corbin, Kansas. She made her profession of first vows on August 13, 1905, and final vows on July 13, 191l.
Sister began her teaching career in the former St John's Boys School, Wichita, in 1904, and remained there for three years. She spent thirty-six years of her life teaching in the elementary schools of Kansas and Oklahoma. Her last year was at Sts Peter and Paul School, Kinsley, Kansas, where she had the upper grades.
From 1940 to 1963 Sister Bernadine was engaged in domestic duties in the various hospitals staffed by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in Oklahoma and at Carlsbad, New Mexico. From 1947 to 1950 she gave her services in the Religious Correspondence School at Calumet, Oklahoma.
In February, 1963, Sister retired from active duty but continued to help with various domestic duties, especially sewing. She was afflicted with a sore leg for many of these years and was most of the time in a wheelchair. She passed away at 7.00 in the evening on February 18, 1977.
One brother, Mike Miller, Des Moines, Iowa, is the sole survivor of her immediate family. She has numerous nieces and nephews in Wichita and elsewhere. Sister Esther Marie Miller, ASC administrator of St Joseph's Villa, David City, Nebraska, is her cousin.
