Obituary
Floyd J Miller, 80, of Urbandale, died of a heart attack Friday, October 31, 2008 at his home. Miller retired in 1994 after a long career in the cement industry, including 27 years with Penn-Dixie where he was a general manager for 3 years, and 10 years as marketing manager with Dundee-Holnam Cement.
Born in Emporia, KS to Mike and Mary (Boes) Miller, he was a graduate of Bayard High School. He then attended Drake University where he received a BS in Education in 1951. In 1981, Miller was one of only 32 football players to be named to Drake’s Centennial Team, being considered one of the school’s all-time defensive performers. He also received Drake’s prestigious Double-D Award in 2003. Miller was a Drake Relays official for 50 years, officiating at Iowa High School boys and girls state track meets for many years, and he was a football official in the Missouri Valley and North Central conferences for 15 years.
Following graduation from Drake University, he served as a gunnery officer in the US Navy for 2 years, and then became active in the American Legion, serving the Urbandale Post in many capacities, including commander, as well as Sixth District Commander. He was a charter member of the Urbandale Breakfast Lions Club and received the Iowa Lions Foundation Warren Coleman Award for community service.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elmer and Arnold. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathy; four sons, Phil (Judi) of Kenosha, WI, Jim (Sandi) of Indianola, Bob (Eva) of Las Vegas, NV, and Rich of Iowa City, IA; two daughters, Rose (Delk) Grantha of Fontanelle, and Sally of Newtown, PA; thirteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Vince of Omaha, NE, Don of Lakeville, MN, and Ron of Byron, MN; three sisters, Helen Rasmussen of Albert City, Marie Kult of Williamston, MI, and Elsie Lovrien of Clarksville; sister-in laww, Gwen Miller and Florence Miller of Omaha, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
