Obituary
At the parochial residence, of Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, Iowa, on Friday, August 5, 1910, occurred the death of Rev. Father Edward F. Weil. The immediate cause of his death was due to an attack of apoplexy, which ended his life very suddenly. Although Father Weil had not been feeling well, for the past week, his death was entirely unexpected and came as a great shock to the community.

Father Weil was born near Churchville, Iowa, forty five years ago. He began his studies for the priesthood in St. Benedict College, at Atchison, Kansas, where he attended for seven years, after which he attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, for two years, going from St. Ambrose to the Seminary at St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was ordained to the priesthood three years later. On May 27, 1899, shortly thereafter, he was assigned to the pastorate of Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, Iowa, at which place he has always remained, with the exception of about two years, that he had charge of The Church of the Assumption, near his old home at Churchville, Iowa.

The deceased was a good and zealous priest, devoted to his calling and living a life in strict conformity to the rules of that exalted office. He was a man of exceptionally strong personality. His manner of free, large hearted friendliness, won him the true friendship of all with whom he came in contact. His death is the occasion of deep sorrow in the community, in the parish and among his flock, for whose spiritual welfare he labored with unselfish devotion. In his death the church loses a most zealous priest, the community a good citizen and the parish a kind and loving spiritual director. The silent influence of the life so recently closed, has not ceased, for the members his parish and his numerous friends, who knew him but to love him, are benefited by having come in contact with a character so noble, so spiritual and so elevating.

He is survived by his aged mother and six brothers. The remains of the lamented, Father Weil, were on Sunday removed to the church, in which he loved so well to be, where lay the body of the deceased until Tuesday morning. The funeral services were held at the Holy Trinity Church, which was filled with sorrowing brother priests, parishioners and friends, who had come to offer their final tribute of love and respect to their dear pastor and friend.

Before the solemn sacrifice was offered, the priests chanted the office for the dead, after which Rev. Kottenstette celebrated solemn high mass of requiem, assisted by Rev. B. Jacobsmeier as Deacon, Rev. J. W. Bulger as Sub-Deacon, and Rev. F. M. Nugent, as master of ceremonies. The sermon was preached by Rev. J. M. Walsh of Washington, Iowa, who was a classmate in college and seminary, of Father Weil. There were 42 Priests from eastern Iowa present at the funeral. After the funeral services a last look was taken of the deceased and as the kindly features of Father Weil passed from view, each felt that he had lost a personal friend.
The pall bearers who had accompanied the remains from Richmond now gave place to the six brothers of the deceased who had performed a like duty for their father and gently bore him to the Calvary cemetery at Churchville.
